Single malt fans, take note: one of the world’s oldest licensed distilleries just released four new whiskeys, each featuring a different type of secondary cask aging. We got an early taste of each, and with 10 and 12 year age statements, these tasty new bottlings come with price tags that won’t break the bank.
Northern Ireland’s Bushmills often markets itself as the world’s oldest licensed distillery, and it does trace some lineage back to the year 1608 on the bottle labels. But the modern distillery’s real origins date to around 1784, and then mostly in continuous operation after being rebuilt following an 1885 fire.
The company sells an array of Irish whiskeys, including core products that feature single malt blended with grain whiskey: Bushmills Original, Black Bush, and Prohibition Blend all fit this description.
But among whiskey nerds, Bushmills is best known for its single malts. The core range features 10, 12, 16, 21, 25, and 30 year bottlings. Bushmills “The Rare Casks” features a rotating variety of cask finished single malts ranging from 28 to 31 years. And the Bushmills Private Reserve Series—first launched in 2023—is composed of 10 and 12 year old, single vintage single malts.
Private Reserve is back in 2025, featuring four different expressions between 10 and 12 years old. Each bottling was shepherded by Alex Thomas, the distillery’s first female Master Blender.
