Glossier's Black Cherry collection drove double-digit new customer acquisitions for the brand.
Winter can conjure many images and moods, like cozy fires and blankets, buzzing aprés ski, or even a humbug attitude. But usually, black cherry is not such an image the season evokes.
But this time, black cherry is everywhere, at least within the beauty world. First, Glossier launched a Black Cherry collection in January, followed Balmain Hair with burgundy accessories, Fenty’s black cherry lip oil, and a limited edition black cherry hair tool from Shark Beauty. The luscious, almost red-wine color is a chic addition to the occasional drudgeries of winter and surely to elevate even the most relaxed and cozy outfits.
For Glossier, it was a way to tap into a “versatile day-to-night hue” according to Kleo Mack, chief marketing officer at Glossier.
As the brand’s first color-themed collection in its 11-year-old history, the team wanted to tap into the “enduring charm, timeless appeal, and evolving beauty of black cherries … and each product in the collection has a slightly different shade — representing a distinct stage in a black cherry’s journey from youthful vibrancy to deep, nuanced richness,” said Mack.
The popularity of the trend was instantly noticeable. The collection drove double-digit new customer acquisitions for Glossier, with the collection exceeding the company’s forecast by over 50%. Furthermore, the limited-edition cherry-shaped lock sold out in just four hours.
Natalie Dresher, a New York City-based makeup artist, said the easiest way to adopt the look is to use a makeup item you normally would in a cherry color. She suggested the “Rosy Red” lip and cheek stain from MCoBeauty as an affordable option (at $8.99) that offers a cherry red color as a multi-use product. Additionally, trying to match your lips and cheeks (like with the MCoBeauty cheek and lip stain) makes the look more monochromatic and less overwhelming than having a total pop of color in one area of the face, she said.
“Dark cherry works on all skin tones [and] because of its cooler-toned properties, it makes everyone’s teeth look brighter and everyone’s complexions more vibrant,” she added.
“Burgundy is often associated with luxury, power, and sophistication,” said Glennda Rommelaere, ... [+] international trainer for Balmain Hair.
