Scammers asked investors to purchase Bitcoin from exchanges and forward them to the GainBitcoin website through "cloud mining" scheme possessed a multi-level marketing arrangement common in pyramid-based Ponzi schemes where rewards were dependent on the recruitment of new alleged scammers initially paid investors in Bitcoin. However, when the supply of investments in the company decreased in 2017, the Ponzi scheme began to an attempt to cover the losses, GainBitcoin arbitrarily converted the payments to their alleged in-house currency MCAP, which had less value, further misleading CBI registered multiple FIRs across India, alleging large-scale fraud and money laundering.
