Crypto-Currency Fraud

In this news:

The Guardia Civil and the Policía Nacional arrested six people over a crypto-currency con.
Officers working on Police operation Coinblack – Wendimine, made the arrests of the said suspects, aged between 34 and 57, for fraudulently obtaining 19-million euros from 2018 victims through false investment arrangements, allegedly.
The arrests were carried out in Granada and in Alicante and officers searched the home of the reported ring-leader in Spain, confiscating mobiles, computers, hard drives, extensive documentations and a replica firearm.
The said ring-leader was preparing to flee to Dubai when the police struck, according to the police press release.
The gang placed ads on several websites offering crypto-currency investments featuring images of well-known personalities. Furthermore, the victims were not selected at random; instead the thieves used algorithms to find profiles that matched the sort of targets they thought would fall for it.
Once they selected their victims, they placed advertising campaigns on the websites or social media platforms their victims used, offering them crypto-currency investments with high returns and zero risk of financial loss—investments that, obviously, turned out to be scams.
They encouraged their victims to transfer all the money they had in their accounts to crypto currency. When the victims decided to withdraw the money they had invested, the obstacles and impediments began, and at that point they realised they had been scammed.
After a while, the cyber-criminals contacted the victims again, posing as those responsible for the investments and confirming that the money was frozen, that it was possible to recover it, but that to unblock it, they would need to make a new deposit, often for a significant amount.
Then came the second stage of the scam: the victims who had reported their situation received fake emails from supposed Europol officers or bogus lawyers from the UK, informing them that they had managed to recover their money and that the only thing missing was the payment of the taxes corresponding to the country where it was blocked.
Once again, and believing that this time they would recover their investment, they agreed to pay the supposed taxes.
Those arrested have been charged with fraud, money laundering, and documents forgery, as well as belonging to a criminal organisation and remanded in custody.
