Donald Trump's Worst Week Yet

In this news:

President Donald Trump has had a whirlwind of a first month in office, delivering on his campaign promise to wholly remake the government dismantle the federal bureaucracy. Voters had been giving him relatively high marks for carrying out such promises. But less than 40 days in, that honeymoon might be coming to an a number of metrics, Trump just saw his worst week since returning to the office five weeks ago. Several concerning economic indicators this week have raised concerns about a slowdown — a flashing red light for a president who had vowed to prioritize the cost-of-living crisis that helped get him elected. The S&P 500 closed the week lower than where it was on Inauguration Day. Home prices hit another all-time high in the U.S. and the inflation rate has remained stubbornly elevated, complicating the Federal Reserve's efforts to cut interest 's attorney general, Pam Bondi, also did little to help bring in positive press for the second Trump administration after facing backlash from both sides of the aisle for botching the release of federal files related to the Jeffrey Epstein top it off, self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate returned to U.S. soil, giving Democrats fodder to accuse the Trump administration of lobbying for their release. Even Republicans have condemned the controversial influencers, criticizing the Tate brothers as they were freed from travel restrictions in Romania, where they are being accused of rape, human trafficking and money laundering."The Trump Administration's five-plus weeks in office have been a 'tour-de-force' where domestic and international issues have come quickly," Republican strategist Matt Klink told Newsweek."While not directly responsible for a still struggling economy, Donald Trump will be held accountable by voters whose top concern is their family's economic well-being," he said, adding that the administration's "pursuit of downsizing government, rooting out waste, fraud, and corruption at the federal level, and DOGE, in general, is popular with Republican and independent voters, but the economy must be Trump's priority."The Trump EconomyAlthough Wall Street had an initially positive reaction to Trump's victory, the stock market has since given up those gains on concerns over tariffs, mass deportations and sticky inflation three major indices ended higher on Friday, though the S&P and tech-heavy Nasdaq were both in the red for the month. Tech stocks have been particularly hard hit over a combination of uncertainties related to Trump's proposed tariffs and competition with China on AI was the Dow's worst month since December, the S&P's worst month since last April and the Nasdaq's worst month since September housing data released this week also showed that pending home sales in the U.S. slid to an all-time low last month, with home prices increasing for a 19th consecutive month and mortgage rates continuing to hover around 7 percent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also released new numbers on Wednesday that showed inflation unexpectedly rising to 3 percent in , a significant pullback in cryptocurrency markets has also weighed on investors, many of whom voted for Trump under the assumption that he would cut regulations and invest in the burgeoning industry. The price of bitcoin is currently around $84,000, a substantial decline from its January peak of $109, argued that voters don't care about macroeconomic data, like the metrics released this week. What Americans are focused on, the strategist said, is "their ability to afford the basics in life - milk, eggs, diapers, and gasoline."Egg prices have become their own thorn in the president's side, reaching an average of $8 per dozen last week — nearly doubling in the last six weeks because of a nationwide shortage related to the spread of bird USDA said this week it expects prices to continue to rise as much as 40 percent this year. The same agency, meanwhile, said it is in the process of rehiring bird flu experts it accidentally fired as part of the DOGE cuts to the federal workforce."Voters are fickle," Klink said. "They supported Donald Trump because they believed that his vision was superior to that of the Biden-Harris Administration. It's still early in Donald Trump's second term, but voters are anxious, especially after the previous four years of economic uncertainty."The Jeffrey Epstein Bombshell That Wasn'tThe Justice Department and its new head came under scrutiny on Thursday after failing to deliver any new information on the deceased sex offender after Attorney General Bondi hyped up the release of new information related to his case. Bondi had suggested that there the files would include bombshell information, including flight logs and names, that were enough to "make you sick," she told Fox News' Jesse Waters on none of that seemed to come to fruition. The information released Thursday seemed to be compromised entirely of information that had already been made public over the past decade in various lackluster release drew anger from both sides of the aisle, including Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who slammed the DOJ on X, formerly Twitter."THIS IS NOT WHAT WE OR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ASKED FOR and a complete disappointment," the Florida Republican, who was recently tapped to lead a task force on ending government secrecy, wrote. "GET US THE INFORMATION WE ASKED FOR!"Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell also mocked Bondi, posting: "You were promised the full Epstein files. You got this," with an image of an entirely redacted page."I have never seen the Left and the Right come together in a moment [like this]," Representative Jared Moskowitz told CNN on reached out to the White House via email for Brothers Back in USAndrew and Tristian Tate touched down in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday after they were held in Romania on a two-year travel Romanian prosecutors did not specify who made the request to lift the restrictions, a Financial Times report suggested there were officials within the Trump administration who took an interest in the brothers' case and placed pressure on authorities for them to return to the U.S., including special envoy Richard Grenell."They feel secure in America for several reasons, the primary one being that Donald Trump is the president," Joseph McBride, a lawyer representing the Tates, said in a statement. "As a result, they are excited to call America their home again."The brothers have several ties to the Trump administration. One of their former lawyers now works as a liaison between the White House and the Justice Department. Elon Musk, a senior adviser to the president, also reinstated Andrew Tate's X account when he purchased Twitter, and Trump's eldest son, Don Jr., previously called their detention "absolute insanity".Their release led to blowback, even from conservatives who argued there was no reason for the travel ban to be Senator Josh Hawley, asked by the Huffington Post about Andrew Tate, said he didn't think "conservatives should be glorifying this guy at all" and that he "certainly" didn't think the U.S. "should be using any influence in our government to try to get him out of what seemed to be extremely serious charges in Romania."Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also criticized the developments, saying that his state was not a place where the Tate brothers were welcome."I don't know how it came to this. We were not involved, we were not notified. I found out through the media that this was something that was happening," he said at a Thursday news about the Tates on Thursday, Trump told reporters, "I know nothing about that."All of these developments — which do not include a remarkable public spat between Trump, Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday that led to Zelensky being sent home without a promised mineral deal in hand — were enough to make even some of Trump's most vocal supporters wondering aloud if this what they voted Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports who became an avatar for the demographic of young male voters who helped deliver Trump back to the White House, put it in a Thursday post on X:"Why is the release of the Epstein list always a sh-- show? What's the point of booting out illegals and criminals while somehow becoming a safe haven for the Tate brothers? Why is Crypto in the toilet if Trump is crypto king? How far does Tsla stock have to crash before Elon goes back to work?"The post has been viewed more than 10 million times.
