L to R: Lucía Guerrero and Aura Garrido star in "Santuario."
Motherhood becomes the battleground for exploring humanity's future after a climate disaster in the dystopian landscape of Santuario (Sanctuary).
The eight-episode thriller tackles contemporary concerns such as artificial intelligence, social inequality, and the climate crisis, taking viewers inside a mysterious facility where pregnant women are supposedly protected from pollution and an environmental collapse has made the outside world hostile to new life - though the truth proves far more complex.
The series stars Aura Garrido (A Private Affair, El Ministerio del Tiempo) as Valle, an AI engineer with humanistic values, and Lucía Guerrero (Welcome to Eden, El Cid) as Pilar, a pregnant woman who begins to suspect something sinister within the Sanctuary's walls.
We're introduced to Pilar as she gets a tour of the Sanctuary, a facility that promises to be a safe haven for expectant mothers amid the dangerous conditions of the outside world. But as she explores the facility and meets the other women in the center, she has an unsettling feeling she may have been here before. Gaps in her memory of life before arrival, coupled with disturbing nightmares, begin to fuel her growing paranoia as she questions her own mind and present reality.
Lucía Guerrero, as Pilar, is enthralled by the idyllic controlled conditions of the Sanctuary, so ... [+] different from the real world outside this bubble.
Guerrero sees the series as confronting the very uncertainties and technological and environmental dilemmas that are shaping our world today.
"I think it aims, in a way, to give us a small warning, to raise awareness about the importance of the decisions we make now for the future," she says. This exploration of consequence extends to her personal journey with the character. "I'm not a mother, so I really had to immerse myself - not just in what pregnancy might be like, but also in the different emotions, the physicality of it, and the bond of having someone inside you whose purpose is to protect them above your own life."
