A new and “concerning” Android warning is suddenly making headlines, with reports suggesting “millions of phones in New York” and elsewhere face a “costly nightmare." So, what’s going on and what must you do when you see this new alert.
The warnings flag in Play Store, which is where most Android users find and download their apps. And while we have already seen Google delete hundreds of malicious apps with millions of installs this year, this new warning is very different.

Google is on a mission to better match iPhone when it comes to Android’s security and privacy. And that means clamping down on dangerous apps and equally dangerous permission abuse. There is a huge grey area when it comes to those risks, which Google’s latest update is targeting.
Google’s solution is to look for indicators that an app might be best avoided. Recent media reports have focused on warnings that an app has been frequently uninstalled, but others could be low engagement rates, low user counts, even infrequent updates.
