Malaga CF could soon have another owner. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), owners of Liverpool FC, have ramped up efforts to purchase the Costa del Sol club, according to Spanish journalists.
A delegation from FSG, an American multinational sports holding conglomerate, recently visited Spain in order to assess the potential of acquiring the Andalusian club.
The Americans have competition: PSG owners
For the moment, Malaga CF is playing in the second Spanish division, and it is owned by Abdullah Al-Thani, a Qatari sheikh.
FSG is not the only entity in pursuit of buying the club. In the past, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), which owns PSG, had expressed interest in purchasing the Costa del Sol club. Meanwhile, the American sports group has been exploring opportunities in football for some time, with Malaga now becoming one of their top targets.
FSG had already visited Malaga in February to see the club’s facilities and evaluate its potential for future growth. The group is actively searching for football clubs with a strong tradition and significant growth potential as part of their expansion strategy. Their interest in Malaga follows similar evaluations of clubs like Levante, Elche, Espanyol, Getafe, and Valladolid.
Malaga CF has a rich history
Malaga appears to fit perfectly with FSG’s vision for growth in European football. While now in the second division, the Andalusian club has a rich history, playing in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2013. Also, ‘los boquerones’ have played for many years in La Liga and have had many local talents over the years.
This potential partnership could align with Al-Thani’s plans to bring in experienced football operators to help return the club to the Spanish and European elite.
Malaga’s head coach, Sergio Pellicer, voiced his optimism for the club’s future, stating, “We need what’s best for the club, and anyone who wants that is welcome.” With various rich corporations eyeing the club, Malaga’s future could be on the verge of an exciting new chapter.
