Police are investigating the death of a British man found in the water at a Costa del Sol marina.
Firefighters spent around an hour recovering his body after it was spotted between boats at the popular Duquesa Port near Estepona around 4.30am on Sunday.
There was nothing emergency responders could do to save the man, said to be aged around 60, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Civil Guard officers are probing the circumstances surrounding the British national's death.
Well-placed sources said there were no obvious signs of any injuries pointing to a crime having taken place but insisted they would be in a better position to comment following the post-mortem.
Local news site claimed the man's death could be linked to 'shots heard in the area moments before the discovery' but Civil Guard sources said they weren't aware of any gunfire and ruled out any connection.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: 'I can confirm the dead man is British.
'The death is still being investigated but at this stage everything is pointing to it being an accident.'
It was not immediately clear this morning if the man, who was fully-clothed, owned a boat in the marina.
The man's body was discovered between boats at Duquesa Port (pictured) near the popular Costa del Sol resort of Estepona
A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination centre said late yesterday: 'The emergency services have recovered the lifeless body of a man found in the water at La Duquesa port in the municipality of Manilva.
'The alarm was raised just before 4.30am on Sunday.
'Local police, Civil Guard and firefighters were among the emergency responders mobilised.
'The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
In January a British man's body was found floating in the water at a marina in Calpe north of Benidorm following a suspected accident.
He was described at the time as a 53-year-old who had moored a boat he lived on in the pleasure port after arriving from the nearby town of Altea.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Alicante said at the time: 'I can confirm we have recovered the body of a 53-year-old British man from the water at Calpe port.
'We were informed by an emergency response coordination centre around 9.40am yesterday and mobilised specialist divers from our GEAS unit.
'There was nothing we could do to save him. He was already dead by the time police divers reached him.'
La Duquesa port is between Sotogrande to the west and Estepona to the east.
It is packed with bars restaurants and extremely popular with British tourists.
It is the most westerly port in the province of Malaga and lies close to the edge of Cadiz province.
It is also very close to one of the areas with the highest concentration of golf courses in the world.
