Rob Sas is something of a rock legend in the Costa del Sol, who has brought the metal and made it heavy in a region that was never expecting it but needed it.
During the COVID lockdown 5 years ago, he set up in his garden in western Costa del Sol and entertained the confined, garnering cheers from locals on their balconies. Over the years, he’s played with some rock greats, some of the backbones of many of the bands that have kept rock loud and proud through the decades, and recently played with his band, The Rob Sas Band, in Alhaurín el Grande among those he can call family – about 200 bikers, many of whom had ridden down from Germany specially. Euro Weekly News just had to catch up with the Strat-wielding local guitar legend to find out what makes him tick.
EWN: What brought you to Spain?
Rob: The love of Spain, the love of the property we have. This was where I was always going to be. What’s not to love?
EWN: After all these years on the road and playing gigs, do you have a favourite moment?
Rob: So many favourite moments. One would be when I was playing with the John Coglan Band (ex Status Quo). We flew out to Switzerland to a place that looked like the final scene from Close Encounters. The place was rammed full of bikers like here. We flew home to the UK on the Sunday and played a gig with just 6 people and a dog in the audience. A Rob Sas Band gig is always a lot of fun. We’ve come here today to play for friends. You come, you have a good time, you get abused. You give some abuse back, and no one takes any offence. Here you’re amongst friends.
EWN: Don’t you think we’re missing some good ol’ rock along the Costa del Sol?
Rob: There is a lot more rock now than when I first came over.
EWN: Favourite guitar?
Rob: Stratocaster – every time.
Rob Sas has a tour starting April 23 with Deeper Purple, going into May for three weeks. The Rob Sas Band is playing a festival in Sabinillas for San Juan in June, then again at the Garaje Beat Club in Murcia, and then into Almeria in October, followed by Bar de los Amigos in Torrox, and after, at Bar de los Motos in Benalmadena.
