South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued a state of emergency on Sunday after a mass of wildfires spread across the state, burning approximately 1,200 acres and impacting another 3,000. Operations are ongoing to deal with over 175 wildfires. One of the biggest fires threatens residents in the Carolina Forest near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Affected areas include Horry, Spartanburg, Oconee, Union, and Pickens Counties. According to officials, the blaze erupted amid wind gusts of up to 40 mph and arid conditions, and 0% of the fire is contained. Issuing the emergency, Gov. McMaster said, βThis State of Emergency ensures that our first responders, who are working tirelessly and risking their lives to protect our communities from these wildfires, have the resources they need. Dangerous wildfire conditions require that a statewide burning ban remain in effect until further notice. Those who violate this ban will be subject to criminal prosecution.β Around 410 personnel and at least 128 fire apparatuses are involved in the response. Homes within the city limits of Myrtle Beach are under threat of burning down, prompting evacuations. The South Carolina Forestry Commission reported that no deaths or injuries and no structures have been destroyed so far.
