The crypto industry has been promising financial revolution for over a decade, but despite all White House embraces of crypto, most retail users still face a frustrating problem: you can’t buy coffee with your Bitcoin or pay rent with your USDC. This "last mile problem" has kept crypto mostly relegated to speculation rather than truly disrupting payments.
Stablecoins: The Quiet Revolution
While Bitcoin gets the headlines, stablecoins have become crypto’s fastest growing killer app. These digital assets pegged to fiat currencies (primarily the US dollar) have exploded in popularity, with over $160 billion in circulation today compared to single-digit billions in 2020.
The data tells a compelling story. Every month, around 20 million addresses transact with stablecoins on public blockchains, settling over $2.6 trillion in value in just the first half of 2024, according to data analyzed by Castle Island Ventures. Even Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller has acknowledged their significance, noting that around 99% of stablecoin market capitalization is linked to the US dollar.
This has created an interesting dynamic where crypto, often positioned as a dollar alternative, is actually extending dollar usage globally. As Brian Brooks, former US Comptroller of the Currency, has argued, "Stablecoins can keep the dollar the world's reserve currency" by making it more accessible worldwide.

The critical innovation now happening is connecting these stablecoins directly to everyday payment systems without sacrificing self-custody: a principle that separates crypto from traditional finance.
