University of Alicante and Orihuela Explore New Collaboration Opportunities

University of Alicante (UA) Rector Amparo Navarro and Orihuela Mayor Pepe Vegara met this morning to discuss an ambitious joint academic and university outreach project aimed at strengthening ties between the institution and the municipality.
The meeting, held at UA’s Rectorate and General Services building, focused on revitalizing a partnership that dates back to 1982. This collaboration initially involved the Bishopric of Orihuela, leading to the creation of the university campus, the transfer of historical rights from the Historic University of Orihuela to UA, and the establishment of the Archbishop Loazes Chair.
Mayor Vegara expressed his administration’s commitment to transforming Orihuela into a true university city. Both parties discussed proposals for academic programs and cultural initiatives, which will soon be formalized in a collaboration agreement.
During the meeting, Rector Navarro referenced the sculpture “Dibuixar l’espai” by Josep Azorín, symbolizing the university’s deep-rooted historical ties with Orihuela.
The session included representatives from both institutions. Orihuela’s delegation featured Education Councilor Vicente Pina, Urban Planning and Heritage Councilor Matías Ruiz, and legal advisor Emilio Fernández. UA was represented by Vice-Rector for Continuing Education and Languages Rosabel Roig, Secretary General Josep Ochoa, Academic Coordinator of the Archbishop Loazes Chair Gregorio Canales, and INAPH Director Carolina Doménech.
